On the farm today

Hello All - The sun is shining and there are a million things to do. It is exciting around here.

Calvin and Gerald have fixed the tunnel that was damaged by the snow. Yesterday they planted rows of radish and beet greens. Today soil has been cultivated outside and Calvin has put in 3 rows of beans and a couple of peas. Nicole is in the greenhouse planing more onions. The kale and swiss chard that have been growing in the greenhouse are ready to be transplanted outside this afternoon.

Earlier today Ron spread crab meal over the whole farm. It will get worked in hopefully in the next few days.

This afternoon Pauline and Gerry will be over to help sort out a design for the farm market stand and something for the chickens.

As I type this note - I look out the window and see the little tractor coming with compost to spread, Josh's truck parked on the road, he must be talking with someone, and Gerald with the wheelbarrow pulling up black plastic from last years planting.

See you soon!

Week 3 - photos

A wild week

This week has been rather intense for me. With the exception of two mistakes on Tuesday (sorry Amy and Scott) everything worked well. This week I started attending a few meetings again since we started the CSA. In this world of farming, and maybe all worlds, one can be meetinged out. On Tuesday I attended a meeting titled "Ministers Advisory Board on Extension" - it is very exciting. This is an opportunity to provide feedback on what works and doesn't for the agricultural community in terms of extension services. This is a great thing for all of us who are wanting to eat great local food.

And then on Wednesday night we had a meeting among farmers in Kings County. The issue is land and whether there should be restrictions on land zoned for agriculture or not. It was a very good meeting where farmers expressed their opinions and voted.

Now it is Friday and we have been working on the planting list, tilling some soil and working in the tunnels.

The chickens are getting big too and we need to get the chicken coop built. I will load some pictures now. Enjoy the weekend - Patricia

Spring Celebration

Although it was cold and flurry like, we had a fun adventure on the farm today. We went for a walk around the farm and ponds, checked out the chickens, visited the greenhouse and transplanted an amaranth. Nicole made delicious bread and humus and harvested three types of greens for us to try. It was fun. Thank you all for coming - it was great to meet and see you! ~ Take Care, Patricia

Meet the farm crew, take a tour of the greenhouses, take a stroll around the ponds, and get to know your fellow members. Please remember to wear rubber boots. Bring a mug for some coffee or tea or hot chocolate.

Other farm news

This week we are welcoming back Calvin and his brother Gerald to our farm team. We have a lot to do. We need to get more seeds planted for greens before we begin the outdoor, in the field activities. We have a greenhouse that needs to be fixed and a tunnel to put up. We have a cooler and commercial kitchen to build and a small road side stand to design and build too. And the chickens are growing fast and will soon be happy to have a chicken coup - that also needs work.

Our list warrants help and we are happy to have Calvin, Gerald and Nicole and all of the other wonderful helpers - some of the motherly nature - who are helping to make this all happen. P

Tuesday April 7 - Forgot the carrots and onions

Hello All - Well I was feeling good until I realized that I forgot the onions for the city deliveries. And then, I forgot to put the carrots in 4 of the baskets for members in Dartmouth. Oh dear! Next week I will make it up. I am sorry. Details, details, details. I appreciate your patience.

Pick-up Day Wednesday April 1

This day went very well. It was great to see so many new faces and to meet you all! Here are a few pictures of getting the bags ready and of Lily and Izaak with their signage.

Fixing up Tunnels

On Wednesday, our first at the farm pickup day, Josh spent most of the day getting a couple of our tunnels fixed up after a hard winter. The frames here in the front will be fixed soon. This tunnel is filled with Spinach. The tunnel with the plastic in the background is full of corn salad and spinach. The corn salad isn't doing much, but the spinach looks great. This tunnel is also being used to protect the onions from the elements. We have trays of onions planted and we've moved them out of the heated greenhouse to this cold frame.
