A day at the job fair

NSCC and Peopleworx have put on an Employer Expo. I decided to attend to hopefully find a few people for the farm this summer. They delivered us a lunch to our tables. Guess what was in mine?

Granny Smith apples from Washington!

What am I to do? I am here at this job fair to hopefully employ local people and to generate activity in our economy. I am here representing both Taproot and Noggins, we grow apples, and the lunch we were provided is in part supporting Washington.

What would you do?

I'll keep you posted!

  1. I would definately bring it to someone's attention. That is unreal.

  2. NSCC is a publically funded institution. I would think that taxpayers would like to know how their government isn`t supporting the local economy when possible. I would probably tip off the news and see if they were interested in doing an article.

I would also complain directly to NSCC.

  3. I would tell the organizers that it is not acceptable. The local news idea would not hurt either. I am always a believer in offering solutions.... so I would request a meeting with the NSCC campus management to see if you can supply the campus with apples.

  4. I feel like the horticulture department is not directly to blame. NSCC kingstec has a cooking program and the food is generally brought in through them.

I do think it is a good idea to set up a meeting with the school. Instead of just apples maybe try to start to supply more!

  5. Granny Smith apples have always been a particular irritant of mine too. They represent all that is wrong with not buying local! Then again, growing up on an apple farm, perhaps I just wanted people to support my dad and buy HIS apples.

I agree with the others that suggest offering a solution and perhaps making mention to local news. If nothing else, maybe it will serve as a reminder to people in the community that the "buy local" decision affects everyone.

  6. NSCC is in part (a large part) funded by tax dollars through the Nova Scotia government and both your local MLA Jim Morton, the Ministers of Agriculture and Education need to be involved as well as the chief officers of the Community College organization. This is not just a local issue or a one-off complaint. It relates to what should be a policy with all government funded organizations all over the province who buy in food to be eaten under their roofs.
It may be a little more work, but ensuring that all products sourced that can be provided locally are purchased locally will go a long way to support agriculture in this province.
As Atlantic Young Farmers of the Year, you and Josh have some clout in this issue. Go for it!
