  1. Hm, I think you want food suggestions, but I have something else I'd like to say. I would really help me to know what was coming in the basket before I come to pick it up. That way I could plan a meal during the day, pick up my basket + whatever extra groceries I need, and then cook the same night. Right now I have to pick up the basket, go home, look up some recipes, and then I'm too lazy to cook anything that night. :-)

  2. I agree with Dana about having some clue about what's coming. As for foods, hmm. Hard to say. We love just about anything when it's fresh. I haven't been so thrilled with the apples. The spinach is great, but only makes a small amount when cooked up.

  3. Personally, I love the suprises the bag brings each week and knowing what was coming might spoil that :) I have some sort of meat on hand and whatever comes in the basket will be the side for that evening meal. BTW, I made the white bean and cabbage stew and it was delicious.

My wish list? Fresh peas, beans and herbs. Baby potaotes. Leeks. Sunflowers.

    Cheers,
    Taryn

  4. I would like carrots, beets, leeks, swiss chard and kale, different lettuces and tomatoes in season, potatoes of course... can't think what else.
I also fall into the category of those who would like to know what will be in the box, so that I can plan my recipes accordingly.
Spinach has to be in a quantity that is practical for cooking, although I suppose it is meant to be raw for salad in that quantity.
I also am not so keen on the apples.
    Thanks! See you tomorrow.

  5. Most of what I want are already on your list, I think: apples, berries (and other fruit), corn, cucumbers, mushrooms, onions, (sweet) peppers, potatoes, spinach, tomatoes & zucchini.

I like EVERYTHING, but these are the foods I eat most often & are my "fall-back foods". My biggest concern is that they are organic, as at least six of my top most-eaten foods are also on the top-twelve list of foods most tainted by pesticide residue.

If I were to add anything, I'd say celery & sweet potatoes & maybe ditto to sunflowers (& their seeds!)

I'm also good with being surprised each week. 99% of what I eat is either from this or Speerville dried goods (beans, rice, & grains). I always either have something leftover I can eat, or I can make salads or even just potatoes from the box (I'm glad for the potatoes each week!).

For me, it's just as easy (if not easier) to plan something Wednesday from Tuesday's box, than to do it all in one day. Since I imagine you are picking (bagging/trimming) almost right up to the minute, I don't know how easy it would be to let us know foods & quantities ahead of time.

I do appreciate the variety; it either forces me to eat what I know I should, but generally don't (like turnip & parsnip), eat foods I haven't yet been able to make for myself (sprouts), or try new things (like radishes!)

    Thank you! :)

  6. I love the surprises - but I wonder if anyone else is having trouble driving while snooping!

I'd be really interested in knowing when there may be extras of anything (for extra $$ of course.) I like to make jams (rhubarb first)and chutney and pickles so being able to get quantities of certain things would be great.

    Thanks
    Linda

  7. Our family have had fun simply organising our meals around what is in the basket. The kids absolutely love the sprouts and we all loved the Barley and Squash Risotto recipe.
I like the apples. I have never eaten store bought apples because they were so tasteless, but i love these apples because they are so sweet.
My wishlist vegetable would be Broad Beans.

  8. Now that we're coming into the 'fresh' season after the winter, any selection of produce that fits the description will be great to enjoy. In the spring, I always look forward to asparagus, rhubarb, and lots of spinach or other greens as these early crops are so welcome as well as versatile. Elaine

  9. I forgot all about garlic. It would be nice to be able to have some garlic, at least for some of the year, that was not grown in CHINA!
    :o)

  10. I dream of asparagus!!

Thanks so much for everything. We are all enjoying the goodies each week. It truly is like Christmas (:

  11. Wish list? It is just like Christmas!

Besides the wonderful list that appears at www.taprootfarms.ca/csa.php, it would be great to see:

    cantaloupe
    garlic scapes
    sweet potatoes
    fiddle heads
    soy beans (edamame)
purple cabbage (instead of green cabbage?)
    snow peas
    pak choi
    daikon (baby)
    komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach)
    collard greens
    banana peppers
    blueberries
additional varieties of mushroom (portobello, shitake, enoki)
    shallots
    green onions
    red (spanish) onions

The list hints at basil and tomato seedlings, it would also be lovely to have other herb seedlings. It is great to clip from live plants of:

    oregano
    dill
    cilantro
    parsley

And while you can't plant them, other local produce would be cool too:

    cheese (w/o animal rennet, foxhill)
    yogurt (foxhill)
    tofu (acadiana)

  12. Whow - this is exciting to see the comments. So I guess I should get moving with sorting out how to do the add on's. I have been working it out in my head. Do you think that doing online ordering for add ons would work? How do you think it would best work for payment? Online? Pay at pickup? I am thinking for things like eggs, yogurt, cheese, meats etc.

In terms of knowing what is in your basket - I could have a heading - contents this week. I know by Monday for the most part what will be in it. If you want to keep it a surprise then just don't come to the taproot blog until after the pickup???? I like the element of surprise but I can appreciate in life planning how knowing could help. We can discuss it further.

  13. Oh, I'd love to be able to order a few extra things on-line & buy them Tuesday. As for payment: I bet you'll get a split right down the middle as to whether it's better to pay on line or in person. Personally I'd be thrilled to order and pay on-line because I never have any cash on me. (It somehow vanishes when I put some in my wallet.) :-)

As for surprise vs. not surprise: maybe you could put it in a comment on a special weekly blog post? That way everyone can see the blog, and only those of who want can click on the comments for the special post and see what's coming. (And it will double as a great place to share recipes for that week.)

  14. I don't feel like I need to know absolutely everything that's going to be in the basket, either. So there could still be some surprises.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I like the idea of add-ons - but you may get into trouble if we all decide we want eggs the same week! :)

I agree w Dana in that you'll probably have a split regarding payment & we'll be the first two on opposite sides! :)

I tend to be a cash kind of girl & would prefer that - plus I like the idea of buying directly from you (& other farmers) & wouldn't want cc/paypal fees to cut into that for you.

Now if you think it will be more efficient & 99% of everyone else wants online payment, that might make the question moot. :)

  16. Hello - is there a place where the weekly recipes could be posted? I am already filing the sheets - but I know I will lose them!

I am looking forward to berries of all types - and fresh herbs - either cut or in seedlings.

We are loving our weekly basket - thanks so much!

  17. I'm going to try and post this for a 4th time! My wish list would be:
*Sweet Million cherry tomatoes (I've never tasted tomatoes SO SWEET!)
    *Asparagus
    *Garlic
    *Italian Parsley
*Chayote Squash (don't know if it will grow here)
    *Watermelon (or any melon)
    *Blackberries

I would love the option of adding eggs and stuff on the weeks we need them, i'd pay cash cause that's how I budget my groceries--no more cash=no shopping! Love the surprises! I'm missed out on the pesto last week, none in the basket :-( , you must have run out! Keep up the great work!

  18. Don't necessary need to know what's coming in the basket...that's part of the whole experience - the surprise for the week. Also, have the snooping in the back seat while I drive to see what goodies this week has brought.
Wish list: Asparagus; Garlic; berries (any kind); Beet greens; Swiss Chard; Red onions; sweet potatoes....
    getting hungry now...

  19. I don't think I need to add anything everyone has covered it for me .
It's so nice to see that ppl care to put there time in to this for others "ppl helpin ppl"

  20. For add on's
I think you should try PAY-PAL

  21. LOVED the sprouts this week. I would never have bought them on my own!

As for wish lish-- Celery would be amazing.

Giving some idea of the next week's contents on the blog would be lovely. I'm a planner in my soul, so I'd appreciate it. Also-- even if I know something's coming (like the sprouts) it's still a surprise to actually use/cook something so unfamiliar.

    Thanks!

  22. The baskets have been wonderful! Like Christmas and that is what we enjoyed with the Greenbergs as well. I look forward to the surprise of what is in the basket each week. If I were to add to the list:

    fresh herbs, sage, rosemary etc.
    leeks
bigger bags of greens, spinach, lettuce

    ReplyDelete
  23. Here's a suggestion in regard to add ons:
Taproot to develop a price list for such items (this may evlove seasonally); in the week prior to expected readiness of the add ons, we place our order and pay for it at that time, (Cash or Visa) directly to Patricia. This way Patricia then has the cash flow to purchase on our behalf and we have the convenience of the service she gives us.

  24. I'd like to add BEETS to the wish list. We love roasted beets and could eat them every week.

Also, we would be keen to have some Chinese greens - baby bok choy etc. These are hard to find in the stores.

Peaches too please, when the time comes.

Fresh herbs would be lovely - dill, oregano, basil, mint... our last CSA prepared little baggies of different herbs and at pick-up, we would choose the bag that best suited our cooking plans. And if we came late and there was only one herb left, we dealt with it:)

I am also always overjoyed when there's a little something for a vase in the bag - the pussy willows were a lovely surprise and so I'd love sunflowers or snapdragons or some other sprig of nature for the table.

    Thank you!

  25. Savoy cabbage? I like the other cabbage but savoy has a richer flavour and you can do more with it...

  27. Hi there - I just wanted to say that we are LOVING the weekly basket. I love the surprise. It gets me out of my comfort zone, and takes the pressure away from planning meals for the week, as the basket determines what we're eating.
I usually plan on making a salad with some sort of meat or fish for dinner, so I always have some extra salad trimmings on-hand, and toss it with olive oil and balsamic, so the uniqueness of the basket each week is fun.
I usually swing by Foxhill cheese after picking up my basket to pick up some accompanying cheeses and plain yogurt to eat with the delicious fruit and baked potatoes.
We have been really enjoying the homemade pesto (divine with bbq fish and chicken and pork), the tomatoes and english cucumber this week were amazing. The apples have been delish, and the bean sprouts have been a nice easy & quick salad lunch option for me (especially the crunchy bean ones). I also loved the mixed greens from week 1.
The recipes have been easy and wonderful: I made the squash soup and froze it for future use, and the blue potato chips were sooo yummy. And I love receiving fresh flowers.
On my wish list: Asparagus, plum tomatoes.
    You're doing a wonderful job!
